Here is my dad, Carl "Grady" Naylor, sometime in 1943 or 1944. My dad enlisted in the Navy Reserve on September 9, 1942, and became active and shipped out on December 21, 1942, three days after I was born.
My dad served with distinction in the South Pacific with the Seabees and as a MMOM aboard both a PT boat and at least two destroyers. His final assignment prior to the end of the war was on DD753, The U.S.S. John R. Pierce, a brand new destroyer, on which he served from early 1945 until the end of 1945. He was mustered out in January of 1946.
He was called back to active duty at the beginning of the Korean War, but because he had a wife and children at home, he was exempted from active duty.
Dad's Last Ride in WWII
Here is a picture of the Destroyer, USS John R. Pierce, DD753, that my dad served on beginning in the spring of 1945. It did escort duty in the Atlantic from January 1945 until the war ended in Germany. It was then sent through the Panama Canal to be included in the invasion fleet for the final assault on Japan. Fortunately, the war ended before DD753 ever engaged in combat with the Japanese.
